1 Stein + Co. is a board game released in 2003 for 2–4 players, 30 minutes per game, and ages 8 and up. It was designed by Niek Neuwahl and its main mechanics are Tile Placement and Enclosure.
1 Stein + Co. is an abstract game with simple rules. Players take turns placing stones. The goal is to enclose empty squares on the board. Each square enclosed by a played block counts one point (Enclosed space must not be able to fit a block). The stones measure 2 x 3 x 4 squares and can be placed in any of the three alignments (i.e. covering 2 x 3, 3 x 4 or 2 x 4 squares). After the first stone is placed, subsequent stones must touch at least one previously placed stone - but cannot touch a stone with the same alignment (unless the player is able to score with the new stone). When the board is so full that no further stone can be placed, the player with the highest score is the winner. The rules offer a variant scoring system for three or four players, in which not only the active player scores, but also the player preceeding him/her.
1 Stein + Co. supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for 1 Stein + Co. is 30 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists 1 Stein + Co. for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
1 Stein + Co. has a complexity rating of 1.6 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
