Charge & Spark is a board game released in 2023 for 2 players, 10–20 minutes per game, and ages 6 and up. It was designed by Akiyama Koryo and Kozu Yusei and its main mechanics are Hand Management.
In Charge & Spark, you and your opponent will try to reduce each other’s health to 0 or be the first to reach the goal space in the center of the board. Since there are two potential objectives, you must consider your opponent’s position and work to counter their dominant strategy—they might slip right past you if you aren’t careful! In this game, players select a card to play for the turn and reveal them simultaneously. Certain cards have effects that cancel each other (Barrier reducing damage taken, Trap or dealing damage preventing Move, Counter reflecting damage, etc.), so it is important to consider what resources your opponent has at their disposal on any given turn. After paying the associated cost (if applicable) and resolving the card effects for the turn, used cards are placed into each player’s recharge area. If there is a card already in the recharge area at this time, it returns to each player’s hand. By looking at the card in your opponent’s recharge area, you will have a better idea of what they might do next. The game proceeds as above until one player’s health tokens run out or one player reaches the goal space in the middle of the center board. 「チャージ&スパーク」は、色々な効果を持つカードを駆使して、相手のライフを削りきるか、先にゴールすることを目指す2人専用カードゲームです。 使うカードはたった16枚!戦略と読み合いが楽しい心理戦ゲームです。 - Both summaries from publisher
Charge & Spark supports 2 players according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The listed playing time for Charge & Spark is 10–20 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Charge & Spark for ages 6 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Charge & Spark has a complexity rating of 1.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
