In Flanders Field is a board game released in 2014 for 2–4 players, 45 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by Martin Wallace and its main mechanics are Push Your Luck, Player Elimination, and Area Movement.
In Flanders Field takes the player to the very heart of what it would have been like to be a CO in the trenches of Flanders. At every move you must make decisions that will determine the fate of the men you command. Your troops must face bombardment from the enemy's artillery, tanks and aeroplanes. How many men will you risk on a particular course of action? A game for 2-4 players where you take a role as a British Company Commander attempting to be the first to reach the "Objective Line". You start from your own trench and must advance across "No Man's Land" while trying to limit your casualties. It's a "push your luck" game where you roll dice and play cards matching the roll, after which you can decide to try to advance further, or stop and carry out card actions. Pushing too far could incur heavy losses.
In Flanders Field supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for In Flanders Field is 45 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists In Flanders Field for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
In Flanders Field has a complexity rating of 1.6 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
