Jolly Christmas is a board game released in 2025 for 2–5 players, 20 minutes per game, and ages 8 and up. It was designed by Seppe van Ael and its main mechanics are Set Collection and Pattern Building.
In Jolly Christmas, the Christmas tree is decorated from top to bottom. It is filled with complete strings of lights, cleverly placed ornaments, and finished with the finest tree topper. Make sure to pay attention to what your opponents need so you can snatch ornaments away from them. Whoever has the most beautifully decorated tree at the end wins the game! Each player builds their own Christmas tree by collecting decorations. In each round, players take turns placing their elf on one of the decoration cards to claim it. The claimed card is then added to the player’s personal Christmas tree. The way in which the elves claim the cards determines the turn order for the next round. By placing ornaments strategically in the tree, players earn points. You must also pay attention to the lights in the tree: if you manage to complete full light strands between the cards, you earn additional points. After fourteen rounds, it’s time to place the tree topper. Everyone has now created a beautiful tree with fourteen cards. The topper is placed above the two topmost cards, completing the tree. Then all points from the ornaments in the tree are counted, together with the points from completed strings of lights and the topper placed at the top. The player with the highest score has created the most beautiful Christmas tree and wins the game! —description from the publisher
Jolly Christmas supports 2–5 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Jolly Christmas is 20 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Jolly Christmas for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Jolly Christmas has a complexity rating of 1.5 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
