Market Movements is an expansion for Downsize released in 2016 for 2–6 players, 10–40 minutes per game, and ages 10 and up. It was designed by Lewis Shaw and its main mechanics are Hand Management and Open Drafting.
The expansion takes the form of 20 unique cards, five of which are revealed at the start of the game. The cards, which represent different effects, can be used once only per game, by anyone at the table, as an action. The cards represent everything from devious sabotage to risky trade-offs. Once revealed, they're akin to a loaded revolver in the middle of the game table: whether you want to use them to level the playing field, or utilise them as a bargaining tool should you think someone is bluffing. Think somebody escaped with too many juicy profits? Bring them back in with a Bailout. Want to expose someone's workforce? Employ some Hackers. Think someone is too close to Downsizing? Surprise them with some friendly Interns. Market Movements is a simple addition that gives you so many possibilities for different avenues of game play. Whether you want a grudge match with a rival or a more interesting game with a group of friends, we hope this will add a great deal more playability to the core game.
Market Movements supports 2–6 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Market Movements is 10–40 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Market Movements for ages 10 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Market Movements belongs to these categories: Card Game and Economic. Its main mechanics are Hand Management and Open Drafting. Categories describe the theme and setting of a game, while mechanics describe what players actually do on their turns. Each mechanic links to a catalogue hub with similar games, which helps when you want something comparable.
The credited designers of Market Movements are: Lewis Shaw. These credits come from the published game data and name the people responsible for the game’s design, not its illustrators or publishers. Designer pages on MeepleRules collect other titles by the same designers, which helps when you enjoy a game and want to find similar ones.
The catalogue lists Market Movements as an expansion for Downsize. Expansions add new content, rules or scenarios to the base game and usually cannot be played on their own, so you need Downsize to use it. Check that your edition of Downsize is compatible, as some expansions were revised between editions.
