Movie Trailer is a board game released in 2012 for 3–8 players, 45 minutes per game, and ages 14 and up. It was designed by Andrea Chiarvesio and Pierluca Zizzi.
In Movie Trailer, players take turns being the director and teasing one another with clues about a movie they have in mind. In a round, the active player (a.k.a. the director) chooses a movie title and writes it down in secret. She then chooses one of the genre tiles to provide a first clue as to what the movie is. The player to her left is the spectator, and if no one guesses the movie, the spectator chooses one of three groups of clue tiles, from which the director chooses one and offers it to all as the next clue, with players being able to guess in clockwise order, starting with the spectator. Whoever first guesses the movie in question earns points, with more points being awarded the earlier that the player guesses correctly. The director tries to choose a movie title that can be guessed not too early and not too late for she scores the most points if the title is guessed after four clues. If no one has guessed the title after seven clues, no one scores and the spectator becomes the new director. After all players have been director at least once — or an equal number of turns in a longer game — the player with the most points wins.
Movie Trailer supports 3–8 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Movie Trailer is 45 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Movie Trailer for ages 14 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Movie Trailer has a complexity rating of 1.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
Movie Trailer belongs to these categories: Movies / TV / Radio theme, Party Game, and Deduction. Categories describe the theme, setting and style of a game rather than its rules. Filter the catalogue by the same category to find similar games when you enjoyed Movie Trailer and want something comparable for your next game night.
The credited designers of Movie Trailer are: Andrea Chiarvesio and Pierluca Zizzi. These credits come from the published game data and name the people responsible for the game’s design, not its illustrators or publishers. Designer pages on MeepleRules collect other titles by the same designers, which helps when you enjoy a game and want to find similar ones.
The catalogue lists Movie Trailer as a base game. It can be played on its own with the components in the box and does not require any other title. Expansions, if any exist, add new content or rules on top of it and are listed separately in the catalogue with a link back to this base game.
