Raft & Scupper is a board game released in 2019 for 2 players, 10–30 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by David Vander Laan and its main mechanics are Modular Board.
Raft & Scupper is a 2-player abstract strategy game played on a shrinking and morphing set of tiles. Two pirate crews battle for domination of the high seas: the round-bellied Yellowbeards, and the square-jawed Blackbeards. Each crew strives to raft together all the ships of their preferred rigging or cargo. But victory also belongs to any crew who scuppers four ships while their opponent scuppers none. Each turn a player performs one of four actions. (1) One of the player's two pirates moves within a connected group of ship tiles of the pirate's color (cargo) or shape (rigging). (2) A pirate sails a ship tile that it occupies to a new location. (3) A pirate scuppers (sinks) an adjacent ship tile. (4) The player passes. Consecutive passes end the game in favor of whoever last scuppered a ship. Initial tile arrangements are provided both for a full game and for a short game. —description from the designer
Raft & Scupper supports 2 players according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The listed playing time for Raft & Scupper is 10–30 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Raft & Scupper for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Raft & Scupper has a complexity rating of 2.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
