Rookie Heroes is a board game released in 2017 for 2–4 players, 30–45 minutes per game, and ages 10 and up. It was designed by Rodrigo González and its main mechanics are Variable Player Powers, Hand Management, and Set Collection.
Broke Hill, 1981. The city is experiencing a surge in violence, and the popular local group of superheroes, "The Guardians" can not cope. They are looking for a new recruit. Each of the players will be in the shoes of one of the rookie heroes who intend to join "The Guardians". To do this they will have their abilities (each will be specialized in one of the four - Strength, Speed, Elements and psychic) and Heroic Resources (cards). The test is to undergo a normal day in the city, solving real missions. Which achieved more (and more important) missions, who will stay with the job. Each turn the First Player will show several missions. Each player will place a bid for the mission he wants. Every player will face one mission per turn, and try to fulfill it. To get it you will use as many dice as your main characteristic for this mission, and you can negotiate and use bonus cards to do it easier. The hero with the most Mission Points will win, and will join "The Guardians".
Rookie Heroes supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Rookie Heroes is 30–45 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Rookie Heroes for ages 10 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Rookie Heroes has a complexity rating of 1.3 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
