Runebound: The Frozen Wastes is an expansion for Runebound: Second Edition released in 2009 for 2–6 players, 120–180 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by John Goodenough, Jason Steinhurst, and Jonathan Moriarity and its main mechanics are Dice Rolling and Role Playing.
Belongs to the Runebound Series. From release announcement (found on TGN): To the North of Terrinoth, across the Sea of White Fangs, lies cold and desolate Isheim, the Land of Ice. After millennia of sleep in this frozen realm, the Ancients are beginning to stir. These strange and powerful creatures arise to serve the wrath of their immortal master, Arshan the Mad. The Years of the White Death are at hand, a time when doom shall claim all peoples who call this land home. Unless a hero can brave this unforgiving landscape and stand against the woeful and destructive might of Arshan, all of Isheim will be destroyed. The Frozen Wastes features a new, beautifully rendered board overlay, 110 new cards, six new Hero figures, and winter survival gear. The ever-changing weather is represented by new rules for the harsh conditions, weather tiles, frost counters, and white death counters. New icy terrain types include features such as snow drifts and tundra. New creatures include vicious icewyrms, menacing wendigos, and formidable frost giants. You must own the Runebound basic game to play this expansion. Expands: Runebound: Second Edition
Runebound: The Frozen Wastes supports 2–6 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Runebound: The Frozen Wastes is 120–180 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Runebound: The Frozen Wastes for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Runebound: The Frozen Wastes has a complexity rating of 2.8 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
