Strange Creatures is a board game released in 2026 for 3–5 players, 30 minutes per game, and ages 10 and up. It was designed by Matthias Cramer and its main mechanics are Deck, Bag, and Pool Building and Trick-taking.
Welcome to Lumora - a secret island full of unusual lifeforms: the Strange Creatures. During their expedition players discover new lifeforms, expand their collection and try to earn precious stamps. Use your creatures wisely to gather the most points and become the Legend from Lumora. Strange Creatures is a trick-taking game with Deckbuilding-elements. During each trick every player plays one creature-card. The player who wins the trick with the highest card in the lead suit gets a stamp. The other players get to activate the effects of their cards. Which may grant coins or stamps. Some of the strangest creatures have very special effects. Next players discover new creatures from the display. The expedition-costs are covered by paying with the coins previously gathered. The bought cards go directly to the players' hand. That's how each personal deck grows during the game, giving that player new opportunities as time goes by. A round ends when one player is out of cards. At the start of each round the players all their cards back in to their hand. After four rounds whoever has the most stamps wins.
Strange Creatures supports 3–5 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Strange Creatures is 30 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Strange Creatures for ages 10 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Strange Creatures has a complexity rating of 2.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
