How to win:

After the 9:00 PM round, Austria wins with at least three pieces east of the objective line; otherwise France wins.

Setup

  • Set the time marker to 6:00 AM and place morale tokens as shown, plus three French tokens in the uncommitted area.
  • Set up each army’s units and concealed starting pieces as shown; shuffle French starting units face down and reveal them to France.
  • Place French reinforcements in the holding areas shown for 5:00 PM, 11:00 AM, and 4:00 PM.
  • Austria begins; each hourly round has an Austrian turn, then a French turn.

Turn

  1. At turn start, move the active army’s tokens on that time-track space to its uncommitted pool.
  2. Clean up blocking pieces when the opposite locale is not enemy-occupied; this is mandatory and costs no command.
  3. Take three commands; resolve actions sequentially, with most actions costing one command.
  4. March, attack, or organize; defensive off-road marches, main-road marches, and all bombardments cost no command.
  5. Eligible reinforcements may enter by road march; entry is optional and subject to crossing limits.
  6. At turn end, resolve morale clean-up; advance the clock after both players have taken turns.

Ending

  • Demoralization ends play immediately and gives the opponent a decisive victory.
  • After the 9:00 PM round, resolve the marginal victory condition if neither army was demoralized.
  • A reduction from bombardment, retreat, or losing an assault costs one morale.
  • During end-of-turn clean-up, lose or return committed morale tokens according to occupation, adjacency, and timing.

Mistakes

  • A road march moves exactly one piece up to three locales; an entirely main-road route costs no command.
  • Only cavalry can continue to block an approach after a qualifying action that ends with cavalry in reserve.
  • A fully blocked approach cannot be maneuver-attacked; wide approaches need two pieces to block fully.
  • French pieces start disorganized and cannot attack or march out of their locale until organized; they may march within it.
  • Austria must commit one morale token for each Austrian piece retreating from a locale.
