Backpacks & Blisters (Second Edition) is a board game released in 2017 for 1–6 players, 20–60 minutes per game, and ages 14 and up. It was designed by Gary Dicken, Steve Kendall, and Phil Kendall and its main mechanics are Hand Management, Point to Point Movement, and Network and Route Building.
The Lakeland walking game for the armchair rambler. Starting in the morning, each rambler sets off from the market town of Keswick with a pound in their pocket and four cards in their hand. Money can be used to buy chocolate or refreshments, bus rides or ferry trips. However the real work of the day is on foot, uphill and down dale. Blisters and the heavy rucksack can hinder walking and at lunch and then tea-time, the number of cards in hand is reduced. All ramblers need to be back in Keswick before six pm … if not, call mountain rescue! The game offers Equipment Cards to the game-play compared to the original 1993 game. Also it now includes a thick and full-colour gameboard, although a cloth map is offered as an extra Kickstarter reward.
Backpacks & Blisters (Second Edition) supports 1–6 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Backpacks & Blisters (Second Edition) is 20–60 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Backpacks & Blisters (Second Edition) for ages 14 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Backpacks & Blisters (Second Edition) has a complexity rating of 2.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
