Contract Rummy is a board game released in 1930 for 3–8 players and 120 minutes per game. Its main mechanics are Hand Management and Set Collection.
California Rummy is a 3 – 8 player variant of the standard deck playing card game Contract Rummy. Seven hands are played with each initial meld requirement of “sets” and/or “runs” getting progressively harder each time. As the requirements go up so do the number of cards dealt. The game uses “draw and discard” mechanics as well as the ability for anyone in the game to “buy” a card if the player whose turn it is does not want the card. The card is purchased by also taking a “penalty card” from the unused stock. An individual hand ends when one player goes out by either melding or “laying off” all of their cards in hand. All others count their hand point totals against them. At the end of the 7 rounds, the player with the least amount of total points is the winner.
Contract Rummy supports 3–8 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Contract Rummy is 120 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
Contract Rummy has a complexity rating of 1.7 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
