Escape from Iron Gate is a board game released in 2019 for 3–8 players, 45–60 minutes per game, and ages 13 and up. It was designed by Theo Hoglund and its main mechanics are Hand Management, Set Collection, and Trading.
Welcome to Iron Gate prison. It's not where anyone would choose to spend their time, but for now, it's home sweet cell. You and your "friends" have been wrongfully accused of a crime and don’t belong behind bars. You’ve made your case first to the judge, then to the warden, but no one is buying it. Looks like there’s only one path to freedom: a good, old-fashioned prison break! Well, today is the day - you’re going to make a run for it. The good news? One of you is going to make it out. The bad news? Only one of you is going to make it out. Your objective is to escape Iron Gate Prison by moving through each of the four areas on the board – from the Cellblock to The Yard, The Cafeteria, The Warden’s Office, then finally to freedom! In order to progress to the next area, you’ll need to turn in the items on your Gate Card to the Commissary. Items are collected by completing puzzles, drawing, acting, and trading. The player that passes through the Final Gate first wins. —description from the publisher
Escape from Iron Gate supports 3–8 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Escape from Iron Gate is 45–60 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Escape from Iron Gate for ages 13 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Escape from Iron Gate has a complexity rating of 1.4 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
