Expect Delays is a board game released in 2024 for 2 players, 20–30 minutes per game, and ages 13 and up. It was designed by Patrick Brennan and its main mechanics are Take That, Pick-up and Deliver, and Deck, Bag, and Pool Building.
Expect Delays is a 10-20 min deck de-builder for 2 or 4 players all about the joys of riding public transit. Players take on the role of busy commuters desperately trying to get to work via an underfunded and barely operating subway system. Players share access to a deck of trains they use to move commuters along their train lines. On their turn players may board riders, run lines, repair trains, or take trains out of service by removing them from the shared deck. Players must utilize this tug-of-war style deck building to make sure their commuters can progress further then those on the opponents line. The player with the most destination points when the deck runs out of cards and the subway comes to a grinding halt, wins the game. —description from the publisher
Expect Delays supports 2 players according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The listed playing time for Expect Delays is 20–30 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Expect Delays for ages 13 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Expect Delays has a complexity rating of 1.8 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
