Kiitos is a board game released in 2020 for 2–4 players, 45–60 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by Matthew Thredgold and its main mechanics are Hand Management.
Kiitos is a fast-tempo, card-based word game with novel, simple rules and deep, emergent game play. Can you make a word with the letters in your hand, and what letters that may or may not be in your opponents’? Players start by playing one letter of a word and saying a target word. Then subsequent players build up the target word, either playing the next letter if they can, or by changing the target word dynamically if it can’t be continued. Can your word be finished for positive points, or can you trap your opponent into not being able to play and force them to pick up the unfinished word for negative points? Can you outwit your player with cleverness? If your opponent finishes your word for you say “Kiitos”, the Finnish word for thank-you. The rules change dynamically as the game is played and the game play switches between two modes: Kiitos which builds up words from left to right, and Super-Kiitos which builds up words at either end. Dubious words can be challenged. Fake words are OK if you can get them past your opponent unchallenged. Kiitos edge-case tests the dictionary like no other game. It’s a word game that feels somewhat like a trick-taking game, with a bit of deduction and bluffing. Lateral thinking and clever strategising are rewarded, sometimes. Luck can make or break your strategies. The target word can change 5 or more times just in the one hand. —description from the designer
Kiitos supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Kiitos is 45–60 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Kiitos for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Kiitos has a complexity rating of 1.7 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
Kiitos belongs to these categories: Card Game and Word Game. Its main mechanics are Hand Management. Categories describe the theme and setting of a game, while mechanics describe what players actually do on their turns. Each mechanic links to a catalogue hub with similar games, which helps when you want something comparable.
The credited designers of Kiitos are: Matthew Thredgold. These credits come from the published game data and name the people responsible for the game’s design, not its illustrators or publishers. Designer pages on MeepleRules collect other titles by the same designers, which helps when you enjoy a game and want to find similar ones.
The catalogue lists Kiitos as a base game. It can be played on its own with the components in the box and does not require any other title. Expansions, if any exist, add new content or rules on top of it and are listed separately in the catalogue with a link back to this base game.
