Mahjong Solitaire is a board game released in 1981 for 1 player and 20 minutes per game.
It is a solitaire matching game that uses a set of Mahjong tiles. The 144 tiles are arranged in a four-layer pattern with their faces upwards. A tile is open if it can be moved either left or right without disturbing other tiles. The goal is to match open pairs of identical tiles and remove them from the board, exposing the tiles under them for play. It was originally designed for playing on computers.
Mahjong Solitaire supports 1 player according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The listed playing time for Mahjong Solitaire is 20 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
Mahjong Solitaire has a complexity rating of 1.1 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
Mahjong Solitaire belongs to these categories: Abstract Strategy and Puzzle. Categories describe the theme, setting and style of a game rather than its rules.
