Miskatonic Madness is a board game released in 2005 for 2 players and ages 8 and up. It was designed by Richard Launius and its main mechanics are Dice Rolling, Tile Placement, and Open Drafting.
This game is set in H.P. Lovecraft's fictional Miskatonic University. The two players take on the roles of either the Cultists out to wake one of the elder gods, or the Investigators trying to get to the bottom of it and save humanity. From the designer, on the website: ...this is an update of a very simple game I designed years ago and gave out a conventions to people who play-tested Arkham Horror and my more robust game designs. It is meant to be simple and in no way is comparable to Arkham Horror or Trail of the Brotherhood, but in it's own right is fun and there is a strategy to playing the game. Lastly like Lovecraft stories, the magic of this game is in the imaginations of the viewers. With imagination it is a fun little game.
Miskatonic Madness supports 2 players according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The catalogue lists Miskatonic Madness for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Miskatonic Madness has a complexity rating of 1.3 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
