Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game is a board game released in 2023 for 1–4 players, 15–30 minutes per game, and ages 8 and up. It was designed by Gonzalo Alvarez and Will Rogers and its main mechanics are Hand Management, Card Play Conflict Resolution, and Deck Construction.
In NAWALLI, a creature battle card game based on Aztec mythology, you take on the role of a shapeshifting sorcerer known as a Nawalli to summon Nawals — allies such as creatures of the forest, ghosts, and monsters to battle in the arenas. The game comes with four partially pre-built decks, representing Aztec gods from the four directions: Tezkatlipoka, Tlalok, Ehakatl, and Xipe Totek. In the main game mode, players select one deck, then draft a complementary team of creatures, items, and spells before doing battle in the arena. Each creature you summon has unique abilities based on the twenty Aztec Daysigns, e.g., Eagle allows your creatures to fly one lane over to attack, Jaguar allows shifting one lane before attacking, and Snake allows eating defeated Nawals to absorb their powers. Nawals can be combined together to create a hybrid creature with more health, power, and both sets of abilities. Shapeshifting a Nawal restores its life completely, so finish off your opponent's wounded creatures to avoid giving them a powerful play.
Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game supports 1–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game is 15–30 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Nawalli: The Aztec Card Game has a complexity rating of 2.4 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
