Night Soil is a board game released in 2025 for 2–5 players, 60–90 minutes per game, and ages 14 and up. It was designed by Jon Moffat and its main mechanics are Variable Player Powers, Income, and Area Movement.
Night Soil is a very mature game about sanitation in Tudor London. As the exemplar of cultural progress in Europe, Tudor London (1485-1603) is at the spear’s edge of cultural and technological development. However, as modern plumbing is still generations away, the city is gradually filling up with human waste, making it a terribly fragrant place to live. In the game, players run competing night soil companies. By night, laborer cards will be used to carefully maneuver waste cubes through the narrow streets of London to turn a profit and to recruit workers. By day, these workers can be sent out into London to advertise, to garner favor with local businesses, or to improve their company's assets. However, crowds of workers do tend to add to the waste problem. At the end of the game, the player who has managed to make the most money wins! —description from the designer
Night Soil supports 2–5 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Night Soil is 60–90 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Night Soil for ages 14 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Night Soil has a complexity rating of 3.1 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-weight game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
