River Woods is a board game released in 2025 for 2–4 players, 60–75 minutes per game, and ages 14 and up. It was designed by Geoffrey Chia and its main mechanics are Set Collection, Tile Placement, and Hexagon Grid.
River Woods is a challenging and strategic tile placement exploration board game for 2 to 4 players. Players take on the role of City Dogs travelling to explore the challenges in the forest and collect the gifts of nature. They will also get to meet local companions as guides to assist the players in achieving the best experiences in the River Woods. The game is played within 5 rounds. Each player’s turn consists of the following phases: 1. Select Action - In each player’s turn, that player must place one of the numbered Action Discs to perform a Terrain Action, Companion Action, or Movement Action. 2. Check Objectives - At the end of a player’s turn, that player will need to check if the requirements of Terrain Objective Cards or Round Objective Cards can be met. The round ends after players perform 3 turns, and then prepare the setup for the next round. At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins the game. —description from the publisher Awards: Bangkok International Game Festival 2025 - Best Strategy Game
River Woods supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for River Woods is 60–75 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists River Woods for ages 14 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
River Woods has a complexity rating of 2.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
