Seven Merry Monsters is a board game released in 2024 for 3–6 players, 20–40 minutes per game, and ages 8 and up. It was designed by Martin Schlegel and its main mechanics are Set Collection and Trick-taking.
In Seven Merry Monsters, only the numerical value of a card is important in a trick, and any cards you win in a trick are added to your display — but in the end, only the color of the cards counts. The player who plays the highest card in a trick wins those cards and places them in their display. However, if a second player plays the same highest card in a trick, they immediately decide who wins. Any player who hasn't played a card yet can now place a card from their hand in their display. At the end, you score points for the cards in your display. It's a good idea to collect as many different monsters as possible, but as few of the same type (color) as possible. —description from the publisher In einem Stich sind nur die Zahlenwerte der Karten von Bedeutung. —description from the publisher (German)
Seven Merry Monsters supports 3–6 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Seven Merry Monsters is 20–40 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Seven Merry Monsters for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Seven Merry Monsters has a complexity rating of 1.3 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
