Attack of the Kaiju is a board game released in 2017 for 2–6 players, 60 minutes per game, and ages 14 and up. It was designed by Matthew Grau and its main mechanics are Variable Player Powers, Dice Rolling, and Action Points.
Description from the publisher: It's an old-fashioned, black and white, giant monster movie throwdown! Take control of your very own giant monster to defeat other kaiju and level the city. Evade military forces and lure your opponents into the line of fire. Carefully manage your Power to optimize the destruction, which earns you even more Power in following rounds. Game play is fast and strategic. Luck is a factor but success is more a result of careful planning and strict resource management. Topple buildings, defeat the military, complete each turn's objectives, and pick fights with other kaiju to earn Victory. This determines turn order in each round, and the player responsible for the most overall devastation wins the game. Attack of the Kaiju may be played with teams or as a free-for-all match. Length of play is flexible. A basic three-round game takes about an hour. The double-sided game board allows for basic and advanced play, and unique kaiju abilities vary the action.
Attack of the Kaiju supports 2–6 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Attack of the Kaiju is 60 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Attack of the Kaiju for ages 14 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Attack of the Kaiju has a complexity rating of 3.5 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-weight game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
