Karesansui: Weeds is an expansion for Karesansui released in 2013 for 3–6 players, 50 minutes per game, and ages 10 and up. It was designed by Joseph Kisenwether and its main mechanics are Set Collection and Auction / Bidding.
Karesansui: Weeds, an expansion for Karesansui, puts an extra challenge in your effort to tend the Masters' rock gardens and create pleasing arrangements of stones. During set-up, place the five wooden weed tokens in the bag along with the stones. When drawing stones from the bag, if you draw a weed, place it with the pile of rocks that you're currently assembling for bid. If you win a weed along with rocks, you wait for everyone to place their rocks in their gardens, then you place the weed in another player's garden. During scoring, you receive one demerit card for each weed in your garden. If you place a rock in a garden where a weed is located, you remove the weed in place of the rock. Alternatively, if you pass during bidding, you can remove all of the weeds in your garden. In either case, removed weeds are placed into the bag once again. You just can't get rid of them forever!
Karesansui: Weeds supports 3–6 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Karesansui: Weeds is 50 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Karesansui: Weeds for ages 10 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Karesansui: Weeds has a complexity rating of 2.5 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
