Malacca is a board game released in 2013 for 2–8 players, 20 minutes per game, and ages 9 and up. It was designed by Jan Dřevíkovský, Kryštof Kozák, Jan Daněk, Jiří Daněk, Jiří Dvořák, Ondrej Kares, and Stepan Pudlak and its main mechanics are Role Playing, Betting and Bluffing, and Rock-Paper-Scissors.
Trade vessels sail through the Straits of Malacca. Every vessel holds cargo, which is a temptation for potential attackers (i.e., pirates). At the same time, a fortune can be made by peacefully trading with these vessels – as long as they are not looted by others. The players are ship captains – famous captains of history such as Henry Morgan, Pierre Le Picard, and Sayyida al Hurra – who can trade with these vessels, attack them, or defend them from attacking players; what's more, the Governor of Malacca offers special privileges for those who choose to defend the vessels against pirates. The money you earn can be spent on new powerful equipment available on the local market. Malacca is a fast-paced card game based on estimating other players' strategy and choosing the right play and wager. You can best your opponents by estimating their strategy and utilizing it for your own purposes. Whoever acquires the biggest treasure after twelve rounds wins!
Malacca supports 2–8 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Malacca is 20 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Malacca for ages 9 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Malacca has a complexity rating of 2.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
