Paper Tales: Beyond the Gates is an expansion for Paper Tales released in 2018 for 1–7 players, 30 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by Masato Uesugi and its main mechanics are Hand Management and Open Drafting.
Blinded by their quest for power, Kingdoms progressively break the barriers of forbidden knowledge. In occult and illicit places, necromancers and alchemists dig deeper each day towards the doors of the Underworld. At the risk of awakening something that goes far beyond their imagination... Paper Tales: Beyond the Gates contains twenty new units and six new buildings that are meant to both preserve the balance of the base game and enhance its possibilities and replay value. With this expansion, players can now start with a set of seven buildings available, out of eleven, and these buildings are different every game. Each new building opens new strategies, as does the impact of the new units. Beyond the Gate also includes all components needed for supporting up to seven players. It also includes a solo mode in which a single player has to face the powerful armies of the Lich King. This mode comes with specific Necropolis and Lich King cards.
Paper Tales: Beyond the Gates supports 1–7 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Paper Tales: Beyond the Gates is 30 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Paper Tales: Beyond the Gates for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
