Quinto Império is a board game released in 2013 for 2–4 players, 40–90 minutes per game, and ages 8 and up. It was designed by David M Santos-Mendes and its main mechanics are Set Collection, Dice Rolling, and Campaign / Battle Card Driven.
Loosely translated from the publisher's site: Game about the history of Portugal and the Portuguese identity. More than a game, the Quinto Império (translated as Fifth Empire) is a journey through history and the identity of a people with timeless traditions. Based on the 5th and 6th grade curriculum, the game is an extraordinary way of remembering the Portuguese origins. Since the birth of the Kingdom of Portugal the kings always sought to expand the national territory. Now, it's up to the player of playing a Portuguese historic character, and recreate the great voyages and adventures of Prince Henrique the Navigator, Vasco da Gama, Afonso de Alburquerque or other fearless Portuguese sailor. Discover and (re)invent the Fifth Empire of Father António Vieira and Fernando Pessoa. The destiny of the empire is in your hands. Game play: The purpose of the game is to get more points than the other player or get the starting objectives accomplished Through the buying of national monuments with the trade goods acquired in trade posts or with the 14 resources, or the 9 Padrões (stone pillars with the Portuguese coat of arms used to mark the claim of land during the Portuguese age of discovery) that you can get by answering right to the questions.
Quinto Império supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Quinto Império is 40–90 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Quinto Império for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Quinto Império has a complexity rating of 1.5 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
