The Long Road is a board game released in 2018 for 2–4 players, 30–45 minutes per game, and ages 8 and up. It was designed by Marco Canetta and Stefania Niccolini and its main mechanics are Hand Management, Area Majority / Influence, and Deck, Bag, and Pool Building.
In the old west of The Long Road, players have the difficult task of leading large herds of beef through prairies and highlands to the livestock markets. In the course of the journey, players try to guide the long caravan according to the most favorable route. Once they finally get to the destination, they split the proceeds from the sale. This division, however, doesn't happen fairly, but according to the rules of the far west: The best armed (or the smartest) takes most of the booty. A player's turn takes place as follows: You MAY change your caravan cards. You MUST play one caravan card on a destination. You MAY play a character card if you didn't before on this destination. You MAY apply the effect of the caravan card. You MAY buy one weapon. You MAY assign weapons to one character. You MUST draw cards to refill your hand of three caravan cards. When a destination is full, the sale takes place and the players get proceeds from the caravan cards based on the effects and values of the characters they've played, a value that could be increased by weapons. Then character cards are split as well. The game continues until the fourth sale triggers the end. At that point, the richest player wins.
The Long Road supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for The Long Road is 30–45 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists The Long Road for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
The Long Road has a complexity rating of 2.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
