There's Been A Murder is a board game released in 2019 for 3–8 players, 5–15 minutes per game, and ages 13 and up. It was designed by Steve Darlington and its main mechanics are Hand Management, Cooperative Game, and Communication Limits.
There's been a murder in an austere country house in 1930s England. Everyone's a suspect, but nobody wants to talk about it! Can the players work together to solve the mystery, or will the murderer escape justice? In There's Been A Murder, players may not talk about the cards they hold in their hand or that they've seen during play. By playing their cards and following the instructions they can discover who holds the key cards, allowing the Detective to uncover the Murderer. When this happens, everyone wins! The game comes with 24 cards (22-24 for advanced play only), and each card in the game has a unique power to aid or hamper the deduction. During the game, players will hold two cards in their hand and choose one to play on their turn. After resolving any relevant effects, the next player will take their turn. The players win if the Detective is successfully used to find the Murderer, or the Murderer is passed to the Confidant. The players lose if the Murderer kills the Witness, or if the deck runs out of cards.
There's Been A Murder supports 3–8 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for There's Been A Murder is 5–15 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists There's Been A Murder for ages 13 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
There's Been A Murder has a complexity rating of 1.3 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
