War of the Toads is a board game released in 2027 for 2 players, 15–20 minutes per game, and ages 10 and up. It was designed by Alan Wallat and its main mechanics are Memory and Card Play Conflict Resolution.
The excitement of this yomi-style game comes from predicting your opponent's move and countering it. Battle across two Wars with identical decks. Take turns to attack and defend. Play two cards each turn, one face-up and one face-down. Choose carefully, as your face-down card has a hidden tactic that affects it's ally when revealed. Did we mention each Toad comes with a unique hidden tactic?! After each battle is resolved, capture the defeated as hostages. When your deck runs out, it's the end of the War. The extra wrinkle comes from leaving out a casualty and swapping decks at the end of the first War: Will you take out a high casualty, leave your opponent with a weak deck and go for the revenge win? Or try to dominate the first war and eek out a victory by forcing a stalemate in the second? Features: plenty of bluffing a smidge of card counting, and hand-drawn Japanese wood-block inspired Samurai Toads —description from the designer
War of the Toads supports 2 players according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The listed playing time for War of the Toads is 15–20 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists War of the Toads for ages 10 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
