Bôken is a board game released in 2026 for 1–2 players, 900–1800 minutes per game, and ages 11 and up. It was designed by Miki Tajima and Quentin Guénard.
Bôken aims to faithfully recreate the experience of Japanese RPGs from the 80s and 90s in a board game format. It offers a vast campaign lasting 15 to 30 hours set in the open-world kingdom of Lanoth, featuring exploration, combat, loot, villages, shops, NPCs, quests, dungeons, bosses, and more… It is a cooperative or solo adventure game for 1 to 2 players who will need to collaborate to defeat the game. It faithfully replicates the mechanics of console JRPGs while also taking into consideration the significance of board game dynamics. Each player will take on the role of a hero. If you're playing solo, you can either control a single hero or play both heroes, just like in a two-player game. You will explore the kingdom of Lanoth, its lands, villages, and dungeons while battling hostile creatures along your path. You'll also encounter the inhabitants of Lanoth who will entrust you with quests, and your destiny will unfold as the adventure progresses. The scenario offers many hours of gameplay, requiring several sessions to complete. An instant save system has been designed to allow you to stop, store, and bring out the game within a minute, thanks to magnetized character sheets and a magnetized game board. —description from the publisher
Bôken supports 1–2 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Bôken is 900–1800 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Bôken for ages 11 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Bôken has a complexity rating of 2.7 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
Bôken belongs to these categories: Fantasy, Fighting, and Video Game Theme. Categories describe the theme, setting and style of a game rather than its rules. Filter the catalogue by the same category to find similar games when you enjoyed Bôken and want something comparable for your next game night.
The credited designers of Bôken are: Miki Tajima and Quentin Guénard. These credits come from the published game data and name the people responsible for the game’s design, not its illustrators or publishers. Designer pages on MeepleRules collect other titles by the same designers, which helps when you enjoy a game and want to find similar ones.
The catalogue lists Bôken as a base game. It can be played on its own with the components in the box and does not require any other title. Expansions, if any exist, add new content or rules on top of it and are listed separately in the catalogue with a link back to this base game.
