Crisis 2020 is a board game released in 2007 for 2 players, 90 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by Joseph Miranda and its main mechanics are Area Movement, Area Majority / Influence, and Simulation.
When developing tensions break out into open conflict, all of America becomes a war zone as the Government and Rebels clash. The crisis is at hand, but armed conflict is only half the battle because modern wars are also fought on a ‘data’ front of public opinion. CRISIS 2020 offers players fascinating choices between force and finesse – between striking power and subtlety, as they strive to raise new recruits while converting, neutralizing, and eliminating the opposition using cutting edge ‘Cyberwar’ concepts that are employed by armed forces and insurgents all over the world. And it is the preservation and use of political power, in the form of Crisis Cards, which can make or break an operation. Should you consolidate regional governments to ensure local control? Call out the National Guard to defend a region and improve its ability as a recruiting ground? Send in an FBI Strike Force to deal with the rabble-rousers and cyber-punks? Suspend elections? Issue an Emergency Decree? Or seek Foreign Intervention from the U.N., South America, Canada, Mexico, or NATO? The listed playing time for Crisis 2020 is 90 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Crisis 2020 for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Crisis 2020 has a complexity rating of 1.9 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
