Danger Game is a board game released in 1998 for 2–6 players, 60 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by Reynir Harðarson and Þórólfur Beck Gunnarsson and its main mechanics are Roll / Spin and Move.
In Hættuspil (or Danger Game) the player takes on the role of a young person and his or her object is to collect the 25 points needed to win. Collecting points is done by buying items according to each person's interests. The points can be lost as well, for example if the player gets a drug card. The game was designed and published by the founders of CCP to finance the beginning of their EVE Online project. According to the manual of the 2013 re-release, Danger Game was developed in collaboration with Iceland's Alcoholics Anonymous group to teach children the inherent dangers of drinking and drug use. The game's original box art features a man, actor Jón Gnarr Kristinsson, dressed as a woman. Years later, Jón Gnarr (as he has legally changed his name to now) would become mayor of Iceland's capitol city Reykjavík. When developer CCP considered re-releasing Danger Game as part of an anniversary box set for EVE Online, it approached the former model and mayor to reprise his role as the damsel on the cover. Gnarr agreed and appears on the reissued game's art.
Danger Game supports 2–6 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Danger Game is 60 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Danger Game for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Danger Game has a complexity rating of 1.0 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
