Pencils & Powers is a board game released in 2017 for 1–8 players, 30–45 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by Mark A. Jindra and its main mechanics are Dice Rolling and Paper-and-Pencil.
Description from the designer: Pencils & Powers is a 1+ Player Roll & Write adventure game system. Roll 3d6 and then assign the dice to exploring, monsters, and treasures. With the ultimate goal of defeating monsters, gathering treasure, and improving your heroes before time runs out. The game is playable solo or with your friends. All players play simultaneously from the same roll of the dice. However each will individually choose where to assign those dice. As the game progresses the heroes will gain access to rooms filled with monsters and treasure. The treasure gets richer, the heroes get stronger, and the monsters become more powerful as the game progresses. The game ends when times runs out, your heroes are all dead, or you have defeated all of the monsters. A final score is tallied and an ultimate winner is declared. There are currently 12 adventures available. Ancient Evil Awakens (fantasy campaign) - A1: The Dread Knight - A2: The Forgotten King - A3: The Crazed Alchemist - A4: Dragon Castle Challenge - A5: The Motherload Mine - A6: Maze of the Minotaur Red Alert! (sci-fi campaign) - RA1: Asteroids! - Alien Overrun Other Adventures - All Hallows Eve (halloween theme) - The Cult of Cthulhu (cthulhu theme) - Caverns of the Krampus (xmas theme) - The Shadow Spire (fantasy theme)
Pencils & Powers supports 1–8 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Pencils & Powers is 30–45 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Pencils & Powers for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Pencils & Powers has a complexity rating of 1.8 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
