The Baton Races of Yaz is a board game released in 1984 for 2 players, 60 minutes per game, and ages 8 and up. It was designed by C. C. Stoll and its main mechanics are Grid Movement and Hexagon Grid.
Published in issue #82 of Dragon Magazine, Feb 1984. Republished as part of a boxed set: The Best of Dragon Magazine Games in 1990 The Baton Races of Yaz is played by two teams of Skadingles, Flibdills, Tarnoses and Luggants. The team that breaks all its bulges with its baton in the shortest time is the winner. Each side has 2 batons, 5 Skadingles, 5 Flibdills, 5 Tarnoses, 8 Luggants and 10 Bulges The game consists of a setting phase, when the bulges are placed on the map, and a movement phase. Skadingles are fast but can only move through mud (clear). Flibdills are slower but can move through mud and muck Tarnoses are slower again and can travel through all 3 kinds of terrain. Luggants are the slowest, can move through all 3 kinds of terrain, may not carry the baton, and can throttle opposing Yazzites. The interesting mechanic is that the baton may be passed from one Yazzite to another with no movement penalty - allowing long moves.
The Baton Races of Yaz supports 2 players according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The listed playing time for The Baton Races of Yaz is 60 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists The Baton Races of Yaz for ages 8 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
The Baton Races of Yaz has a complexity rating of 1.7 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
