Hike It!: The Backpacking Board Game is a board game for 1–4 players, 30–120 minutes per game, and ages 13 and up. It was designed by Ronald Halliday and TJ Swing and its main mechanics are Take That, Set Collection, and Push Your Luck.
Hike It! is a highly thematic mid-weight board game that puts you deep into the Great Smoky Mountains with just your backpack and your wits. Choose your gear, plan your route, and learn skills while avoiding injuries, dehydration, bad weather, and pesky bears. At the start of the game, players choose a trailhead and three scenic locations to visit during their trek through picturesque Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as the amount of gear and water they want to lug along. A lighter pack mean faster travel, but less capacity to deal with unforeseen events. Players must cope with inclement weather and obstacles that present themselves while hiking toward their destinations. Along the way, they can stop at campsites and water sources to pick up more gear and water, build skills sets that make it easier to overcome challenges, and take side hikes and visit scenic spots for additional points. And when a player is finished hiking, they return to the game as an aggressive bear to chase down any lollygagging hikers still in the park! The hiker who had the best experience (most victory points) wins the game.
Hike It!: The Backpacking Board Game supports 1–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Hike It!: The Backpacking Board Game is 30–120 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Hike It!: The Backpacking Board Game for ages 13 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone.
