Pocket Rails is a board game released in 2023 for 2–4 players and 10–15 minutes per game. It was designed by Mike Elliott and its main mechanics are Closed Drafting and Stock Holding.
A Fast Card Game for 2-4 players where you draft Rail Road Shares into your Portfolio as well as the Rail Yard for everyone to score. Each player a hand of 8 cards featuring a city, company, and good (in a 4 player game a hand is 6 cards). Each player selects one card to place face up in their Portfolio (directly in front of them) and one card to place face up in the Rail Yard (center of the table). All players simultaneously reveals these cards and sorts them into Companies (colors) for ease of viewing. If a player ever has 3 cards of the SAME City AND Company in their Portfolio, these three cards are “Over Invested” and discarded. This concludes the round. After rounds 2 and 3 each player scores companies and goods in their portfolio multiplied by the number of matching companies and goods in the rail yard. The person with the highest score after round 3 wins!
Pocket Rails supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Pocket Rails is 10–15 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
Pocket Rails has a complexity rating of 2.5 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-light game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
