The South Shall Rise Again is a board game released in 2014 for 1–4 players, 30 minutes per game, and ages 13 and up. It was designed by John Welch and its main mechanics are Cooperative Game and Scenario / Mission / Campaign Game.
The South shall rise, and the North will follow fast upon its heels. Two titans will battle for this Nation, and they will not be, as the President had hoped, the “better angels of our nature.” Death will walk the land and not one of us will know peace, not even in the grave. - Private John Picket, in a letter home, Taunton, MA, June, 1861. From designer John Welch comes your chance - with up to three additional friends to alter the course of a fractured United States, increasingly menaced by Confederate zombie soldiers (“Zebs”), and the dangerous Revenants and Glorious Dead that await you. Based on the alternate history of author S.M. Cross’ The South Shall Rise (pending publication), this is a game of tactical combat set during the American Civil War, where those within the Confederacy take a terrible risk to use the dead as reanimated soldiers. With four unique and challenging scenarios to choose from, crawl out of the trenches and rise to glory… or die (again) trying. Good luck... you’re going to need it!
The South Shall Rise Again supports 1–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for The South Shall Rise Again is 30 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists The South Shall Rise Again for ages 13 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
