Unentschieden is an expansion for Drang Nach Osten! released in 1973 for 2–4 players, 360 minutes per game, and ages 12 and up. It was designed by Frank Chadwick and Paul Richard "Rich" Banner and its main mechanics are Dice Rolling and Hexagon Grid.
Introduction: Unentschieden! (Europa II) is an expansion for Drang Nach Osten! (Europa I), an historical game/simulation of the German invasion of the Soviet Union on 22 June 1941 that lead to the gates of Moscow and ultimately to the destruction of the Wehrmacht and the fall of the Third Reich. Drang Nach Osten! carries the Russian campaign from June 1941 to the end of the Soviet winter counteroffensive in March 1942. Unentschieden continues the campaign through 1944-45. The two games together comprise the entire War in the East, 1941-45. Game Components: Four partial mapsheets (numbered Europa 6 through 9). Two 10" x 27" and one 8" x 27" mapsheet extending the DNO map to the east One 27" x 13" mapsheet estending the DNO map to the south & east One set of six supplementary unit countersheets (for a total of 2128 counters) consisting of: One Europa sheet 6 One Europa sheet 7 Two Europa sheet 8 One Europa sheet 9 One Europa sheet 10 (partial sheet) One rules folder and cover. One set of supplementary charts and tables. One Soviet Initial Order of Battle One Soviet Order of Appearance One Soviet Unit Substitution Chart One German Initial Order of Battle One German Order of Appearance One German Unit Substitution Chart Notes: Ground units are Army HQs, Divisions (and Soviet Tank/Mechanized Corps), Brigades/Regiments, and Battalions. Air units are groups of 40-60 aircraft. Unentschieden adds more unit specialisation, although at 26 pages the combined rules are still quite manageable by today's standards. Drang Nach Osten! with Unentschieden lasts for 52 half-monthly game turns (Jun II 41 through Feb I 45) so allowing for one session of several hours per turn, several hundred hours is a realistic playing time.
Unentschieden supports 2–4 players according to the catalogue. This range comes from the publisher’s listed player count, so the game can be set up for any group size within it. Some setups, rules and scoring details may still vary by player count, so check your edition’s rulebook for the exact configuration.
The listed playing time for Unentschieden is 360 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Unentschieden for ages 12 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Unentschieden has a complexity rating of 4.3 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a heavy game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
Unentschieden belongs to these categories: Wargame, World War II, and Expansion for Base-game. Its main mechanics are Dice Rolling and Hexagon Grid. Categories describe the theme and setting of a game, while mechanics describe what players actually do on their turns. Each mechanic links to a catalogue hub with similar games, which helps when you want something comparable.
The credited designers of Unentschieden are: Frank Chadwick and Paul Richard "Rich" Banner. These credits come from the published game data and name the people responsible for the game’s design, not its illustrators or publishers. Designer pages on MeepleRules collect other titles by the same designers, which helps when you enjoy a game and want to find similar ones.
The catalogue lists Unentschieden as an expansion for Drang Nach Osten!. Expansions add new content, rules or scenarios to the base game and usually cannot be played on their own, so you need Drang Nach Osten! to use it. Check that your edition of Drang Nach Osten! is compatible, as some expansions were revised between editions.
