Wings Over France is a board game released in 1992 for 1 player, 60 minutes per game, and ages 10 and up. It was designed by Terry Goodchild and its main mechanics are Grid Movement, Paper-and-Pencil, and Hexagon Grid.
Wings Over France is a solitaire WWI wargame, simulating the day-to-day operations of a RFC Squadron during the month of April 1917, known as "Bloody April" because of the heavy losses suffered by the allied air force. The game puts the player in control of 1 to 3 RFC Flights based in Arras, France. The objective is to sweep the skies clear of Huns in support of the Arras ground offensive, but just surviving would be an achievement. Each squadron has to undertake a number of missions each day (determined randomly), but with limited resources and personnel. The various missions include rece's, bombing raids, destroying enemy balloons etc - but all will involve dogfights with enemy aircraft - with the game easily capable of handling over 20 aircraft fighting in the skies simultaneously.
Wings Over France supports 1 player according to the catalogue. This is the publisher’s listed player count, so the game is designed for exactly that number of participants. Variants for other group sizes, if any, are described in the rulebook of your edition, so check it before setting up a different configuration.
The listed playing time for Wings Over France is 60 minutes. This is the publisher’s estimate for a full game. The actual duration depends on the group, the player count and familiarity with the rules: first sessions usually run longer, while experienced groups often finish faster. Setup and teaching time are not included in this estimate.
The catalogue lists Wings Over France for ages 10 and up. This is the publisher’s recommendation and reflects reading demands, rule complexity and small components rather than theme alone. Younger players can often join with help from an adult, so check the age guidance on your edition and consider your group’s experience with board games.
Wings Over France has a complexity rating of 3.2 out of 5 from BoardGameGeek players, which makes it a medium-weight game. The rating reflects how much rules knowledge, planning and decision-making a typical game demands. Expect a longer first teach for heavier games, and use a preparation guide before game night.
